OpenAI account and API key
Create an OpenAI account, generate an API key and add a small balance so the system can write your listings.
The system uses OpenAI to write your titles, descriptions, tags and image alt text. To do that it needs an API key from your own OpenAI account. Already have an account? Skip ahead to generating the key.
By the end you will have an OpenAI account, an API key, and a small credit balance. You will paste the key into Make in the App 2 lessons, where we also suggest the model to use, gpt-6-luna. OpenAI bills you directly, per listing, for what the system uses.
Steps
- Go to OpenAI. Visit openai.com, click Login at the top right, choose API Platform, then Sign Up.
- Choose how to sign up. Email, Google, Microsoft and Apple are all offered. Continuing with Google is the quickest, and it sits well alongside Google Drive and Make.
- Enter your details. Your name and date of birth, then Continue.
- Create your organization. Use your shop or business name. Skip the team invites. You can add people later.
- Generate your API key. This is the step that matters. Give the key a name (Make, or your shop name), set the project name to Automations, and click Generate API Key.
- Copy the key straight away and store it somewhere safe, such as a password manager or a private note. OpenAI will not show it to you again. Never share it, because it gives access to your account and your balance.
- Add credits. Click Continue, add a payment method and top up. Even $5 is enough to start. Once the balance is in, the key becomes active.
Keep in mind
- Save the key the moment you create it.
- Start with a small balance and watch your usage as you go.
- Never post your API key anywhere public.
